Competition in college sports is fierce and fun.  Sometimes, that spirit of competition leaves the sports arena and heads into politics.  Yet again, USF is at the short end of the political stick, having the goal posts moved by an unloving state legislature to the tune of a $10 million loss in funds.

Looking Back

The #23 Bulls baseball team is closing the season in as high a note as they opened it.  USF swept a three game series against ECU over the past weekend and followed that up with a resounding 15-10 win over #5 Florida on Tuesday night.  The Gators almost pulled off a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring five runs, but failed when Deacon Liput grounded outFor the first time since 1989, USF has defeated FSU and UF in the same season, with both teams ranked in the top five.  The Bulls have not beaten the Gators since 2012, a string of six straight losses.

After the weekend sweep of ECU, two USF baseball players received conference honors.  Tyler Dietrich has been named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after going 6-8 with three runs and five runs batted in.  Peter Strzelecki pitched 8 1/3 innings following the funeral of his father to be named to the conference Honor Roll.

Looking Forward

The USF Football Golf Classic is on May 19th at TPC Tampa Bay.  Proceeds will benefit the USF Foundation.

CBS Sports still loves the Bulls’ football team.  That media outlet consistently ranked USF higher than any other group throughout last season.  In their post-spring-camp rankings, the Bulls come in at #12, second in the state of Florida to #1 FSU.  The Gators are 21st and Miami is 25th in the same ranking.  The Bulls are the highest ranked team not in the playoff auto-bid conferences.  #19 Boise State is the next highest ranking outsider team.

Sports on Earth lists USF as one of a handful of “breakout teams.”
