Spring is here and football spring camp is underway. Every season is loaded with expectations and doubts, none more so than those which begin a new coaching era. Nobody knows what lies ahead, but that next chapter of USF football is starting, now.

Looking Back

The USF softball team beat Boston College but lost to Pennsylvania in a double-header on Wednesday night.

The #40 USF men’s tennis team swept UNC Wilmington on Wednesday.

If you’re a baseball fan, you probably have a healthy dose of superstition, like not talking about a shutout being pitched midway through a game. If you’re a USF baseball fan, you probably won’t mention their current record, which is very good. They beat Jacksonville on Tuesday, 12-6.

In a third, very embarrassing loss at the hands of UConn this season, the USF women’s basketball team lose in the final game of the AAC tournament, 100-44. Despite being abused by the Huskies, the Bulls are still seen as an NCAA tournament team.

Looking Forward

New football head coach, Charlie Strong, is encouraged by the energy he is seeing from the team, but notes that they need to win championships, not just bowl games.

It is really noteworthy when that paper in Orlando is writing positively about USF, which it has loved to target with editorialized news-like stories.

USF men’s basketball, who won just one conference game all season, will open the AAC conference tournament play against UConn, tonight. The Huskies are 14 point favorites.

This is one of those rare instances where the Graze is linking you to premium content. It’s poor form to do so, so it is avoided at all costs. This exception is being made for an ESPN headline that calls USF football a sleeper. Since the Bulls are largely favored to win their conference, calling them a sleeper indicates they have a lot higher ceiling, at least in the view of one ESPN writer. If you don’t want to subscribe, a fan blog has already given a synopsis of the story.

The American may be looking to expand in basketball. Reports citing anonymous sources have indicated that the AAC might consider adding Wichita State as a basketball-only member. Many will recall the disunity of the Big East that ultimately led to its demise when basketball schools and football schools could not align their interests. Conference commissioner, Mike Aresco, rules out adding several basketball schools, but leaves open the possibility of one, which would give the conference 12 teams, matching football, where Navy is football-only.

Former Bull cornerback, Kayvon Webster, is likely leaving the Broncos, with Miami and Philadelphia as potential suitors. He has been relegated to special teams play at Denver since being drafted by them in the third round of the 2013 draft.

It is always hard to decipher spring football camps. Determining whether a strong defensive performance is due to good defensive play or bad offense is difficult. On their second day of camp under the new coaching staff, the defense is looking much improved.
