The collegiate basketball seasons are drawing to a close, giving way to the sports of spring. While the weather in west central Florida may not change, the calendar says it is time for dusting off the bats and mitts. It also says that spring football is less than two weeks away.
Looking Back
The baseball team has started the season strong, gaining a 3-1 record after going 2-1 against Iowa over this past weekend and upsetting #5 FSU on Tuesday night.
The women’s basketball team has dropped from the top 25 rankings after a two game losing skid, but rebounded to put a 79-50 beating on Houston, last night. Ariadna Pujol and Kitija Laksa each scored 24 points in the win. They will visit Tulsa on Saturday.
Looking Forward
Signing Day is history, but USF has just added to their 2017 class by adding athlete, Chauncy Smart. Smart was ranked #1 in Florida and #3 nationally in the 100 meters track category and originally signed with the FSU track program, who released him to play football with the Bulls. He’s a 3 star athlete according to 247 Sports. This could be a real steal for USF. Smart’s star rating is probably negatively impacted by his decision to not play football his senior year of high school, opting to focus on track, instead. He can run the length of the football field in 10.3 seconds, a record he set at Auburndale Senior High School.
The Bulls are ranked again in another preseason football ranking. 247 Sports puts them at #20 in their Still-Too-Early Top 25.
